Research service

Happy researchers at SLBA
Film, radio, TV and music recordings are an important part of the Swedish heritage. The Swedish National Archive of Recorded Sound and Moving Images makes this production available to everyone all over the country.

Due to the Swedish Copyright Law the majority of the collections can only be used for research purposes, the basic criterion being that this research should be documented in a form available to others.

SLBA has decided that equivalent to research are student assignments at the university, college, and other post secondary school education as well as graduation projects in upper secondary school.

The collections are also available for journalistic endeavours, investigations, surveys, preparation for lectures, and activities within the arts such as script writing, film production, and concerts, as well as non-academic research within fields like local history and genealogy. The public has access to the free collections.

If requested by researchers we can provide material from other Swedish film and media archives.

We also give access to Danish and Norwegian media archives through cooperation with The State Media Archive in Aarhus, The National Library of Norway in Mo I Rana, and The Norwegian Film Institute in Oslo.

How to proceed

To access the collections you need to hand in an application form with a short description of your research project. This form can be requested directly from us.

The Research service staff decides whether to approve the application. On the form you indicate what material you want to study.

The Technical department will copy the required material. You willl be informed when the copies are ready.

The studies should be pursued on our premises at Karlavägen 98 in Stockholm or some 40 libraries throughout Sweden, Denmark, and Norway with whom we have agreements on interurban loans.

It is strictly forbidden to remove or make copies from the collections.

When your project is completed we will request a copy of the result for our reference library.
